Update: The new water heater went in fairly okay, but it was an ordeal that lasted 3 hours anyway you look at it. I was already wiped out from work when I got home and we discovered that the old water heater had leaked and then caused a small electrical fire. Luckily the breaker blew and the fire went out thanks to the leak.
